Award for Good Sportsmanship

The recipient of our Award for Good Sportsmanship this year has been a member of NCNE for 40 years! Even though he lives on Long Island, in all of the 30 years that we have held water tests, he has NEVER missed driving to New England to enter or to steward at our tests. He absolutely adores ALL Newfoundlands and gets extreme pleasure out of watching them work in the water, or in just getting them to give him a kiss on the nose.

Because of his ability to get a dog to come out to him – whether he is calling for the take-a-line exercise or calling from the boat, he is a much sought after steward for most of the water tests held on the East Coast. He is also known for his extremely long arms. His water test nickname is “Long-Arm Latronico,” which is amazing considering his rather short physical stature. He can always reach that line that might not be quite close enough to the boat! Bernie NEVER shows any favoritism. He always roots for, congratulates and kisses every entrant – the dogs that is — no matter who they are, how experienced they are, or whose kennel they came from.

He is the biggest cheerleader and the most reliable steward at every water test. He stewarded our water test the year after he had a heart attack, and shortly after his beloved wife Ann had passed away. Nothing has kept him away. It just wouldn’t be a water test without Bernie’s presence.

So this year we’d like to honor Bernie Latronico with our Award for Good Sportsmanship. Congratulations, Bernie!!
